You know it is time to de-clutter your desk when there isn’t even enough room on it for your morning coffee. And what about underneath your desk? Does it look like a snake pit of cables and wires? It’s hard to work when you have to shovel past papers to reach your keyboard. Fortunately, there are simple methods to both decrease the clutter atop your desk and eliminate the sprawl of computer cables and wires under it.
- Tackle the wires – You can arrange your wires a couple easy ways. One is highly affordable, just use binder clips and clip the wires together. Another, more costly option, is to buy a wireless charging pad, often called a powermat. These devices let you charge your wireless mouse, keyboard, and devices just by putting them on it. This way you can get rid of all of the cords you need for either charging devices or connecting them to your computer.
- Reduce desktop clutter – The easiest way to reduce this mess is to rely less on paper. With so much business communication occurring through email, there’s less reason than ever to clutter your desk with printed memos and messages. Refrain, too, from printing out news stories, time sheets, and other business communication. The more paperwork that you store electronically, the less paperwork you will need to spread across your desktop. For those papers which you absolutely must have, store them in binders or file cabinets and store them as soon as possible.
- Throw things away – This may sound easy, but it’s amazing how frequently we will write ourselves a note on a sticky note and not throw it away when we no longer need it. Additionally, after a meeting, we may not need to keep a printout, yet we do. These notes and papers can pile up. Practice throwing away the things you no longer need or have a digital copy of.
